Mondaine's design began as a clock. In 1944 Hans Hilfiker, an engineer at the Swiss Federal Railways, created what became the Official Swiss Railways Clock. In 1986 Mondaine turned that patented design into a wristwatch collection, under official licence from the Swiss Federal Railways.
